How do I troubleshoot Geofencing (on Andriod)?

On Android, Bob uses what’s called a “Foreground service” to make sure “Auto Clock In” (i.e., the geofencing) works even if the app is terminated. This is crucial for its functionality. Sometimes, some of the models/OS (such as OnePlus, Xiaomi, Huawei) act a bit differently, and could close the service, causing the ״Auto Clock In” to stop working.

If you encounter this on your app/device (by seeing that your entries are not reported, despite the fact that “Auto Clock In” is enabled), and you have one of the following devices, we recommend you try to do the following things, based on your device.

Note: The exact steps maybe a bit different, based on the specific OS version and device model.

OnePlus

For OnePlus, we recommend you do the following two things:

Disable “Battery optimization”* for Bob:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps & notifications → See all apps.

  2. Scroll to Bob and select it → Battery → Battery optimization.

  3. Scroll to Bob and select it → select Don't optimize.

Note: Despite the term (“Battery optimization”), switching to this state should not change the usage in a significant way. Bob is already optimized to use a very low battery power.

Lock Bob from getting shut down*, allow it to “sleep” in the background, and prevent the OS from terminate it.

  1. Open the App Switcher from the “Square” icon of the Android bottom toolbar.

  2. Tap the “3-dots” button on the top-right corner, above the app screenshot, and select Lock.
You should now see the Lock icon next to “Bob” above the screenshot.

Note: This should not increase the battery usage, as in the background, the app is switched to Suspended mode, which keeps its resources to the minimum. In fact, this is actually the guideline of both Android and iOS – not to explicitly close apps (excluding cases such as radio or navigation apps).

Huawei

For Huawei, the recommended solution is to disable the OS’ Battery Optimization for Bob:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps.

  2. Tap the ⠇(3-dots) button → Special access → Battery optimization.

  3. On the top-left corner, tap the Not allowed button and add it to All apps.

  4. Search for Bob and select Don’t allow.

Another thing we recommend (if available on your model):

  • Phone settings → Battery → App launch and then set your app to “Manage manually” and make sure everything is turned on.

And last – "lock" Bob, to prevent it from being closed by the OS:

  1. Open the Bob app.

  2. Tap the square icon at the bottom of the Android toolbar to see your recently opened apps.

  3. Find the Bob screenshot and drag it down, then release it.

  4. Now a lock icon should appear on the Bob screenshot.

Note: Despite the term (“Battery optimization”), switching to this state should not change the usage in a significant way. Bob is already optimized to use a very low battery power.

Xiaomi

For Xiaomi, we recommend to do the the following two things: Allow “Autostart” and disable “Battery saver”:

  1. Search for Bob from the device’s search bar → long-press it → select App info.

  2. Under Permissions, enable Autostart.

  3. Select Battery saver* and switch Bob to No restrictions.

Note: Despite the term “Battery saver”, switching to this state should not change the usage in a significant way. Bob is already optimized to use very low battery power. In fact, this is actually the guideline of both Android and iOS – not to explicitly close apps (excluding cases such as radio or navigation apps).

Samsung

For Samsung, there are two steps required. If you’d like, you can try the first one only, and if needed – and the second as well:

Disable Battery optimization for Bob:

  1. Open the Settings app → Apps → Search and select Bob.

  2. Select Battery → Optimize battery usage on the top-left corner, tap and select All apps.

  3. Search for Bob and turn off the switch.

Lock Bob – prevent it from being closed by the OS:

  1. Open the App Switcher from the “Square” icon of the Android bottom toolbar.

  2. Tap the ⠇(3-dots) button on the top-right corner, above the app's screenshots, and select Lock apps.

  3. Find Bob and tap the open-lock icon. Then switch it to a lock icon.

Alternatively, some newer Samsungs have a different way to do this:

  1. Open the App Switcher from the “3-lines” icon of the Android bottom toolbar.

  2. Find Bob and tap the icon on the top of the screenshot.

  3. Choose Lock this app.

Pixel

For Pixel, we recommend you do the following two things:

Turn off “Battery optimization”* for Bob:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps & notifications → Advanced → Special app access →  Battery optimization.

  2. Scroll to Bob and select it → select Don't optimize.

Turn off “Adaptive battery”* for Bob:

  1. Go to Settings → Battery → Adaptive Battery.

  2. Scroll to Bob and turn off Adaptive Battery.

Note: These steps should not increase the battery usage, as in the background, the app is switched to Suspended mode, which keeps its resources to the minimum. In fact, this is actually the guideline of both Android and iOS – not to explicitly close apps (excluding cases such as radio or navigation apps).
